The Founder CanKen Sports Club was formed in 2015 and is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization located in Toronto, Canada. CanKen Sports Club was founded with a mission of promoting middle and long distance running events for all individuals from every background using a Kenyan-style training system. Kenyans abroad and their partners are giving-back-to-global community by nurturing talent, inspiring others and sharing their shared running experiences with a common purpose of youth development, team training, healthy living, and getting in shape and participation.

Eliud Lagat, the club's founder and president and a resident of Toronto, Canada met with colleagues after winter of 2012. The success of Team Kenya at London Olympics in the United Kingdom helped us build on the premise to give back to the communities we now live while using our expertise and experiences. Teaming up and building a global athletic alliance is an attribute that can go a long way in promoting health and fitness to all mankind from all nations.

In September 2016, CanKen held its "First-of-its-Kind" road race in Mississauga in Toronto, Canada. The event drew multi charity organizations and sponsors where the proceeds going towards KidFit Program at Trillium Health Partners (THP). THP is one of the largest community-based academically affiliated acute care facilities in Canada, serving the growing and diverse populations of Mississauga, West Toronto and surrounding communities. CanKen look to put the City of Mississauga into the world stage by hosting all global citizens in our events.

Ambassador Mama Sarah Obama who is the grandmother of former US president Barack Obama was the chief guest of honor at the inaugural event. Ms. Sarah is the chairperson of Mama Sarah Obama Children Foundation an organization that supports individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in Kenya. She came to support a race for a cause and share her experience with the orphanage and educate people on the importance of living healthy.

In 2017, due to technical challenges the club did not host the much anticipated event. However, in 2018 the club will relaunch the event in grandeur and splendor. We expect the City of Mississauga, organizations, partners, participants, individuals, and fans to once again come to live. The club also aims to promote unity of sports as common factor to all global citizens.

CanKen Sports Club in collaboration with its partners plan to grow into a global community leader by adding new evens/races and stage full marathon in the coming years.

The CanKen 5K Road Race is certified by AIMS/IAAF and is accredited by Athletics Canada.
